I can’t wait to see how it finishes out。 I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 Thank you to NetGalley and 47North! 。。。more

Heir of Uncertain Magic is the follow-up to Keeper of Enchanted Rooms and a delightful follow-up。 Merrit Fernsby is back writing but is struggling with his newly awakened magic abilities, particularly communionism (sp?), which means he hears not only Owein (his eight times great uncle), who now resides in a cute dog, but also the grass, trees, flowers, and it is causing a cacophony in his mind that keeps him from sleeping。 Not to mention he has past familial issues he needs to handle and put to Heir of Uncertain Magic is the follow-up to Keeper of Enchanted Rooms and a delightful follow-up。 Merrit Fernsby is back writing but is struggling with his newly awakened magic abilities, particularly communionism (sp?), which means he hears not only Owein (his eight times great uncle), who now resides in a cute dog, but also the grass, trees, flowers, and it is causing a cacophony in his mind that keeps him from sleeping。 Not to mention he has past familial issues he needs to handle and put to rest in order to know if there are relatives who might help him learn to control his magic。 Hulda, the no-longer spinster who is new to relationships, an employee of BIKER (Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms), is navigating an investigation from LIKER (London Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms) and trying to navigate with utmost propriety her blossoming relationship with Merrit。 It's all so daunting for our found family who is living at Whimbrel House。 And things only intensify as the mystery of BIKER'S director, Myra, builds and suspicious characters come to light。 All of this keeps you entertained as Hulda tries to solve the mystery, and Merrit works to keep Hulda safe and protect Owein and the rest of Whimbrel House while still hearing the wind and trees talking to him。 Owein (the precious and precocious pup that he is) does not want to be alone。 It makes for a delightful cozy fantasy mystery and will undoubtedly leave you smiling and hopeful Merrit and Hulda might have future adventures。 。。。more

The first half of this book was very meandering and I wasn’t really sure what the plot was going to be。 It was disappointing after the first book which had pretty constant action。 The book picked up quite a bit in the second half but was kind of confusing。 There were some annoyingly big words used that pulled me out of the story and Hulda is so uptight and stubborn that I really got annoyed with her personality。 I appreciate the advance copy from Netgalley!

Sweet gentle period fantasy。 Lovely romance too。 Very PG, PG-13 if you prefer to avoid the explicit。 Definitely a book for someone that likes good characters。 I don’t think I’ve read quite everything by this author but I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve read by them。

I did not like this book quite as much as the first, but I love the characters and the world and will continue to read the series。 It is still a quick and fun read, engaging my curiosity about what is to come and keep reading。 I love a good chosen family story with just enough mystery and suspense。 I am also excited to know there is more to come in the series。 Thank you to NetGalley and 47North for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review。

I really wish to see more Merrit and Hulda development with their relationship。 But honestly, for me this book is not as good as the first one。 After epic problem with another powerful wizard in the first book, I can’t compare the problem here with the first one。 We get another wizard who wants to be like Silas but I didn’t think it delivered well。 At first we focused on how Merrit suddenly got magic in him, alongside with what happen in BIKER, we will see how Merrit try to face his past and learn his magic。 And I lost all the found family aspect here。 Despite we got Owein as a dog now, I’m not really happy to see their development as family。 With Merrit struggling with his new magic, everything is different in Whimbrel House。 The relationship between Hulda and Merrit is not really that good at first。 Mostly because of Hulda who always so stiff and didn’t know what to do with her professionalism or her relationship with Merrit。 I annoyed with her at first and pity Merrit who always honest with his feeling。 Fortunately, Hulda trying to change for better。 She become more concerned with Merrit and help him with his problem。 But, I still don’t really like how Hulda kind of “obsessed” with Myra after what happen in the first book。Nothing really special with the conflict and it end well。 I think the second book is not necessary to read。 If you read the first book and want to stop it doesn’t matter。 Because the conflict at first book clearly finish and leave no cliffhanger。 And with the ending of this book I think there will be more story from Whimbrel House。 But, I’m not really sure whether I want to continue it or not。I give this book 3 ⭐! SOOO many sequels seem to not do the follow up thing correctly。 This aspect was a nail on the head for me。 10/10 well done。 Give me more!!The multiple protagonists are all genuinely likable people that charm with their sincere efforts。 And each one feels like their own unique person。 One in particular--I won't say who, but if you read the story, you'll know--I became extra attached to and became worried that might mean they might be headed for a tragic ending。 I won't spoil things for you about what happens exactly, but their character arc was my favorite。 The romance is sweet, but turned up a notch in this book。 Nothing explicit but some suggestive stuff--I didn't mind。 lol There were some dramatic twists I wasn't expecting and I had audible reactions to。 The climax had an interesting logic behind it, and I SO appreciate a smart plot ending。 Okay, so the stuff I didn't like as much:The antagonist seemed a little one-dimensional for me。 I wish I could've gotten to know their drive just like we got to know Silas Hogwood in the previous story。 I feel like I didn't fully know the WHY behind their schemes, and I like to know the why。 The story dragged a little here and rushed a little there for me。 There were parts I thought could've been wrapped up in a quicker fashion, and there were other bits I wish were explored a little more。 See above。 And that's it。 Those are my likes and dislikes。 Overall, a very enjoyable read, and I am SO looking forwards to (hopefully) more books in the world where we can get to know even MORE of the magic and unravel some more of the questions that this book brings up。 Especially the HUGE one at the end! (NO, it's not a cliffhanger。。。just a big ol' tease) 4 stars。 。。。more

ARC from NetGalleyCharlie N。 Holmberg really is a lovely writer。 This series has a similar vibe to the Spellbreaker duology。 The old-timey, pearl-clutchy, spinsterish, or well on her way to it, MC is a particular favourite of mine。 She does the plain Jane character well。 There's no suddenly taking off the glasses and becoming some stereotypical stunner。 The love interest finds her attractive because attraction is highly subjective and relative。 It's very sweet。 Charlie does romance without any r ARC from NetGalleyCharlie N。 Holmberg really is a lovely writer。 This series has a similar vibe to the Spellbreaker duology。 The old-timey, pearl-clutchy, spinsterish, or well on her way to it, MC is a particular favourite of mine。 She does the plain Jane character well。 There's no suddenly taking off the glasses and becoming some stereotypical stunner。 The love interest finds her attractive because attraction is highly subjective and relative。 It's very sweet。 Charlie does romance without any raunch, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything。 The plot is good, the characters are dynamic and interesting, and the magic system is fascinating。 There are intriguing mysteries that keep you guessingHulda and Merritt are such a sweet couple, and they go through a lot in this book。 Merritt in particular hits a lot of highs and lows。 I sincerely hope this series continues, which is hinted at toward the end。 I've grown quite fond of these characters, and I'd like to see where their adventure takes us next。 Oh, I do have a complaint。 Charlie, you were pushing it with the Owein lifespan commentary。 I gasped。 I was like。。 she wouldn't。 Would she? She better not。 You better not。 。。。more

I received an advanced readers copy of this book through net galley in exchange for my honest opinions。 Early this year I was on a quest for cozy fantasy books。 So basically an easy read with no violence described in gory detail, no sex scenes and mild fantasy elements。 Which lead me to the first book in this series。 (Because my library did not yet have it available- I bought it and hoped not to be disappointed- and I wasn’t, I loved it and couldn’t wait for the second one to be out!)I jumped at I received an advanced readers copy of this book through net galley in exchange for my honest opinions。 Early this year I was on a quest for cozy fantasy books。 So basically an easy read with no violence described in gory detail, no sex scenes and mild fantasy elements。 Which lead me to the first book in this series。 (Because my library did not yet have it available- I bought it and hoped not to be disappointed- and I wasn’t, I loved it and couldn’t wait for the second one to be out!)I jumped at the chance to read the second one early when I saw it available。 This one just as good as the first one。 All my favorite characters returned especially Owein。 We got to delve deeper into the back story of Merritt and also the inner workings of BIKER/LIKER。 I love how fiercely protective each character is over their little found family, and how each is able to use their gifts to help each other。 I love the building romance, it’s just the right amount。 And I think the mystery of Silas Hogwood and how it spreads out like a spider web just perfect。 I’m looking forward to more in this series! 。。。more

Heir of Uncertain Magic by Charlie N。 Holmberg follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, Keeper of Enchanted Rooms。 Merritt Fernsby knows now that he has magic--actually fairly powerful magic, and a good deal of it given the dilution of magic through the years and the fact his family wasn't actively marrying to cultivate it--and is now grappling with both it and the fallout from learning that being a bastard is the entire reason he was disowned and cast out。 Hulda Larkin, temporary housekeepe Heir of Uncertain Magic by Charlie N。 Holmberg follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, Keeper of Enchanted Rooms。 Merritt Fernsby knows now that he has magic--actually fairly powerful magic, and a good deal of it given the dilution of magic through the years and the fact his family wasn't actively marrying to cultivate it--and is now grappling with both it and the fallout from learning that being a bastard is the entire reason he was disowned and cast out。 Hulda Larkin, temporary housekeeper turned friend turned romantic partner, is seeking to understand why her former boss Myra Haigh has fled and no one can find her while simultaneously trying to fend off adversaries from overtaking BIKER--her workplace。This book is a very different beast than the first one, given that most of the setting involved the enchanted house, which is now a regular house but with a wizardy dog instead。 It also involves the mystery of Myra's actions and whereabouts, which may be a little tougher to get into given that readers only had vague contact with her in the first book and a goodly portion of it was unpleasant because of her role in Silas Hogwood's presence and threat。I understand why people might not love it as much as the first; the trajectory has changed and the world is expanding beyond the house and its island, with the hint of a third book and the implication that it may spread even further, possibly to another country。 It was a little slower to get involved on my end, but the pages began to fall away for me by the middle or last third of it。 Merritt and Hulda's relationship is so sweet, too, and I enjoy his teasing and cheek with her while still being careful and gentle seeing as she's never entertained a man。 I didn't love it as well as the first myself, but I'd still do 3。5 and round up, as it's worth it。Fun little bit: Every time someone said "communionists", I misread it as "communists", which amused the absolute hell out of me。I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
